Hark, Hark

A show for Christmas

Monday 18th December  8.00 (doors 7.30)

Soaring polyphonic traditional carols, irreverent humour about the less spiritual sides of Christmas and rollicking good tunes come together in a rich and varied performance.  The multi-voiced carols of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and beyond, written by ‘ordinary people’ like hat makers and shoe makers are still little known although you may recognise the words but not the tunes.  One such is the glorious fuge-like cascade “Liverpool” written in the mid 18th century by Darwen weaver, Edward Harwood as accompaniment to “While Shepherds Watched”. The quartet know over 20 versions of the carol but this one is the only one which they are contractually obliged to perform!

Other contemporary material visits their group’s own compositions as well as those of The Band and Tom Lehrer. There really is something for everyone
